The King’s Trail: Ancient Pathways of East Maui
The King’s Trail (or Ke Ala Loa O Maui) is a historic footpath that once encircled Maui, connecting ancient Hawaiian communities along the coastline. Part of this centuries-old trail winds through Waiʻānapanapa State Park in East Maui, offering photographers a perfect blend of cultural history and natural beauty.
Walking the trail today, you’ll find yourself on uneven pahoehoe lava flows, with sections of the original stepping stones still visible. These were placed by native Hawaiians, creating a reliable path that helped chiefs maintain control of their island kingdom.
The Hāna Coast section of the trail brings you face-to-face with dramatic black sand beaches, lava tubes, and sea arches—all set against the powerful backdrop of the Pacific. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and really notice the details: the texture of volcanic rock, the contrast of bright green vegetation against black lava, and the ever-changing moods of the ocean.
For a photographer used to capturing weddings, the King’s Trail offers a refreshing change of pace—no posing required, just you and the raw, untamed landscape that’s been captivating visitors for generations.
